Being choosy vs being negative

This is not just about pickup. I don't think there is anything wrong about being choosy and hard to satisfy. If anything it conveys value and experience. However it can easily come off as being negative. For example a friend once suggested we go to a monthly event. It involved live music, crappy booze and some socialization. I told him "It's not that great" then he said "No it's good!!" Now I've seen him with fat or autistic girls. The majority of people are satisfied easily or maybe I should say it makes them feel good to think things around them are great.

So I'm not sure what to do; trying to "fit in", which seems to be what BD suggests in his dating books or being myself and flaunting my dissatisfaction. Or maybe there is a middle way?
