Hey guys,

I don't know how to market myself; it's always something I've struggled with. A big difficulty for me with marketing is niching down appropriately. I don't know whether to call myself a B2B technology writer or to choose a more specific area within B2B technology. My past client work has been spread pretty evenly across cybersecurity, data privacy, and digital marketing topics.

I keep changing my tagline/profile on LinkedIn. One week I'm a "B2B technology writer"; the next I'm a "data privacy writer". But the doubt always remains as to what's an appropriate level of niching, and the results in terms of clients connecting with me never come. Would really appreciate any advice you might have.

You work in OPSEC. Cool.

What do you do exactly? Start there. No one cares about the title, only what you do for them. Right now, none of us know what you can do for us. So we ignore you altogether.

I don't work in OPSEC per se. I'm a freelance writer who happened to get hired to write web content for some companies within the information security space. My expertise is best described as taking complex technology topics and turning them into blog posts & articles that resonate with people.

aka tech writer... see how simple that was. You can also go for Content Producer and titles like it.

However the name yourself does not matter. Focus on the value you add/bring your ideal customer.

Who is your best customer? Ask yourself:

Who pays on time?
Who does not negotiate the rate?
Who you enjoy?
Who respects your work and asks you to come back?
Who already hires writers regularly?

That person will trust you, treat you well, and do repeat business. That person is who you need to observe. What do they already say about your work. Their words will become your marketing. Leverage this well. Ask questions along the way brother.

Keep going!
